WITH A RUGGED coastline and challenging seas, through mountain peaks and chains to wilderness areas, South Africa offers more opportunities for action adventures than anywhere else. Cape Town is also the historical Gateway to Africa, where explorers have started their journeys for over three centuries.
South Africa is ranked second in the Top Ten World Travel Destinations by one of the United States’ most popular online travel guides. iExplore.com, a guide to adventure and experiential travel, determines the best travel hot spots through vacation purchases made by its online visitors in 2007. (Who made the top 10? – Egypt, South Africa, China, Antarctica, Peru, Galapagos, Thailand, Costa Rica, Tanzania, India.)
From abseiling down the face of Table Mountain or paragliding from its summit, bungee jumping at Storms River bridge (at 209 metres, the longest bungee jump in the world), to white water rafting, sports fishing, diving, kloofing, and more.
Shark & whale watching
Gansbaai has grown a whole industry as the Great White Shark capital of the world and thousands of people, including many celebrities, have made the trek to climb into a cage and be lowered under water to watch these amazing animals in their own habitat. Both Gansbaai and Hermanus offer the best whale watching in the world, when the South Right Whale visits these shores between August and November each year.
