Outeniqua Hop Route. Outeniqua Hop Route.

Outeniqua Hop Route.

A scenic tourism route stretching from the long sand beaches which line the Indian Ocean through  fertile farmlands to the majestic Outeniqua Mountains.

The Outeniqua Hop Route threads amongst the Outeniqua Mountains down to the Indian Ocean with its small safe bathing coves and long sandy beaches.  It is surrounded by spectacular scenery, fertile farmland, and has plenty of history to boot.

A number of working farms on the route are open to the public.

  • One of the farms that welcomes visitors is Redberry, a strawberry farm which exports its produce all year round to European supermarkets. The owners are happy for you visit and pick your own fresh strawberries, after which you can sit under the sun shades and gaze at the mountains whilst you have a Strawberry Cream Tea, or lunchtime snack. They also provide plenty for the children to do with pony rides, a play ground, maze and a miniature railway for all the family.
  • Moving along the road from Redberry is Silver Lilly Cheese Farm, where you can sample the home made cheese made by Marianne, who comes from Holland. She will provide picnics and wine to go with the cheese. Once you have sampled all the cheeses you can try to play Klomklop Golf, a Dutch version of golf for all the family, which is great fun.
  • Drive a little further on and you can visit one of the largest dairy farms in the Southern Hemisphere. Nearby is one of the top Thoroughbred horse studs in SA belonging to Mrs Plattener, co owner of Fancourt Golfing estate.
  • This is the only area in Africa where you can see hops growing.
  • There's more to the Outeniqua Hop Route than farms - it is just a short hop from the Indian Ocean. Not only is the route caressed by the mountains, it also has wonderful spots for whale watching in season, and small friendly bays for safe bathing and surfing, right on the doorstep.
  • If your interest is in Game we also have many local Game Reserves to visit.

A drive through the mountains offers visitors superb views whilst experiencing a part of the local history, by driving two of the four passes. The older pass, being the Montagu Pass, meanders through the Hop Farms in the small mountain village of Herold on a well made dirt road. This road was hand built in the 19th century, by prisoners of war. Along this route is a gardeners delight of Proteas, Ericas and abundance of wild flowers with something in flower all year round.

The Hop Route is most famous for its Golf Courses, two of which are rated in the top 100 in the world and in the top 10 of South Africa.  This is the links course at Fancourt Golfing Estate, and George course. In addition to these courses, there are four other top class courses within 10 minutes drive.

The route is blessed with a wide selection of restaurants, there is something to suite everyone, from Italian, German, Turkish, Chinese and South African cuisine.

Every September we hold a Strawberry Festival for the Outeniqua Hop Route. This is usually around the 20th of the month, when we have music, stalls and plenty of attractions.

Not only does The Hop Route have so much to offer the tourist, but it also makes an ideal base to explore the entire Garden Route and the Little Karoo, including Oudtshoorn, De Rust and Prins Albert, due to the Hop Route being in the heart of the Garden Route with an excellent road network.

The Outeniqua Hop Route is the secret of the Garden Route. Not only is the Outeniqua Hop Route in the centre of the Garden Route which makes it easy to travel to other towns in the area, but its beauty is unsurpassed, with views of the Outeniqua Mountains all along the Outeniqua Hop Route. There is plenty to do, see and the people are very welcoming. There is something to suit everyone, an Ideal location for family holidays and the golfing is the best in South Africa.
