Mokopane is essentially a mining town, nestled between mountain ranges alongside the Nyl/Mogolakwena River.
It lies in the Mogalakwena municipal district which covers 1683 sq km and comprises three towns, 117 villages and nine traditional leaders. It has a population of some 325,000, of which 124,000 is under the age of 14.
This is a town that is struggling to find its identity. In fact, it's an amalgam of towns - black and white - that owes much of its existence to the mines around it, rather than the incredible attraction of the Waterberg that it nestles against. Tourism is business tourism rather than the leisure market.
