Cape Whale Coast
The Cape Whale Coast really refers to the towns within the Overstrand municipality -- Pringle Bay, Hangklip, Betty's Bay, Kleinmond, Onrus, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai (Gans Bay on Google maps!). Hermanus is known for the best land-based whale watching in the world, but Southern Right whales will be found all along the south Western Cape's coast during July to September.
Hermanus has capitalised on this, with a Whale Festival, a Kalfiefees (calf festival) and a whale crier. Hermanus' cliff path must be one of the most stunning urban walks anywhere!
But the Whale Coast offers much more. De Kelders at the entrance to Gansbaai is special. When there's a north wind blowing over Walker Bay, awakening to the south of whales blowing must be one of the world's most memorable experiences. You'll also see schools of dolphin close inshore numbering over 200 if you're lucky.
Gansbaai is known as the Great White Shark capital of the world. This endangered species see hundreds of adventurous travellers -- including many celebrities -- making the special trip to experience cage diving with sharks at Dyer Island's Shark Alley.
