Isandlwana Lodge, an oasis in Zululand, is carved into the side of the Nyoni Rock just below where the Zulu commander stood during the Battle of Isandlwana on the 22nd of January 1879. The lodge is conveniently located to Rorke’s Drift, made famous by the movie, “Zulu,” starring Michael Caine and is a part of the daily tours at Isandlwana Lodge.. The view from every vantage point in the Lodge is stunning. Isandlwana is one of the last places in South Africa where one can watch the village come to life in the morning and close down at the end of the day. The Zulus are very hospitable people who capture the imagination of guests from around the world because of their friendliness and fascinating culture. The Lodge was designed to look as if it grew out of the rocks on which it is built. The building is made of native stone from the area with a thatched roof and the furniture is made of African woods. There are12 stylish bedrooms, each en-suite, with a private balcony overlooking the panorama of the battlefield and plain. Fabrics used in the bedrooms were designed and made by Zulu women. Isandlwana Lodge Guest House accommodates a total of six people in a cottage which can also be divided into two units with double inter-leading doors. The unit is self-catering. Guests may pre-book tours and activities offered by the Lodge. Reservations for meals may be made on a space available basis. Magnificent tours of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift and other Anglo Zulu/Anglo Boer war sites are conducted by resident historian Rob Gerrard, author and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, or one of his associates. Other activities include walking trails, horse riding, birding tours, photographic safaris, and the popular Zulu Village Safari where guests visit a typical homestead, the Historic St. Vincent’s church, schools (if in session) or the clinic, depending on one’s interest, and a local Sangoma (diviner).
