UKUTSHONA KO MENDI, THE SINKING OF THE MENDI

Did We Dance, written by Lara Foot and narrated through African elements, sounds and movements, tells the epic story of men trapped on the Mendi as it sank during World War 1 in 1917.

Directed by the Steve Biko Foundation's artistic director and internationally acclaimed theatre director and storyteller Mandla Mbothwe, the play has cast a talented group of performers from across South Africa to create moments from our history that speak of the bravery of these men. A remarkable cast of 8 talented actors brings this 100-year-old fateful event back to vivid life. The script is based on the book Black Valour by Norman Clothier, and the production was first presented in King William's Town, in the heartland of the Eastern Cape, to critical acclaim.
