Description

Heritage with a view: The Taalmonument is a fascinating step back into the past...built in 1975, and designed by architect Jan van Wijk, it acknowledges the influence of a variety of languages such as Dutch, Malay, Malay-Portuguese, Arabic, French, German, English, and the indigenous Khoi and African languages, on the development of Afrikaans. Guided tours are available.

The Monument, with spectacular views of the Drakenstein valley, is an ideal picnic spot with popular events such as full-moon picnics, stargazing evenings and music shows during the summer months. Pack your own picnic basket or book in advance from Volksmond Coffee and Curio Shop (tel. 021 863 2800). Volksmond (meaning “slang” or “colloquial”) is a lovely coffee shop for Sunday lunches and sundowners, as well as for family gatherings and year-end functions.

The Monument with its beautiful gardens is a romantic out-of-this-world wedding venue, whether you prefer a picnic wedding or a formal setting with a tent.

For the adventurous at heart there is easy access to a variety of hiking and biking trails on Paarl Mountain.
