Port St Johns

Port St Johns is a village on the Eastern Cape's Wild Coast alongside the Umzimvubu River which carves its way through mountains leaving two 300 metre ramparts towering on either side. The river was deep enough in 1905 to be considered one of the best harbours in Southern Africa, but silting of the river mouth proved insurmountable.

It is an idyllic location between the setting of the river, the beaches and steep mountains which are both craggy and lush.  It's not surprising that it attracts nature-lovers and artistic types, but one should not forget the fisherfolk too!

Luxurious resorts lie alongside the river while the small town typifies the mayhem and chaos of most African towns. In this respect, it is an authentic African village with its own charm, and not a prettified resort town.  One thing does, however, set Port St Johns apart, and that's the runway (built for the one-time Transkei Air Force) on the flat-topped mountain above the town.
