Spion Kop Lodge, set against the backdrop of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains on an expansive 700 hectare game farm, was the headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces, General Sir Redvers Buller, in the relief of Ladysmith Campaign, during the South African war of 1899-1902.

This beautifully restored, colonial style farmstead, boasts a magnificent dining-room with spectacular views. Luxurious, en-suite accommodation offering a choice of full-board or self-catering facilities, an exceptional swimming pool and conference room in park-like grounds, making this the perfect base from which to explore the berg, bush, birds and battlefields of this historic region of KwaZulu Natal.

Spionkop was the scene of one of the bloodiest and perhaps, most futile battles fought during the South African War of 1899-1902. Relive the memories and walk in the footsteps of three great leaders, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and Gen. Louis Botha.

Your host Raymond, will accompany you to the many historic sights. He paints a vivid picture of the personal trauma and military mindset that resulted in the slaughter of so many British and Boer soldiers. Tours to the various battlefields can be made in the comfort of air-conditioned vehicles.

The region offers some of the most exciting birding opportunities in South Africa. The avian diversity is tremendous, with over 270 bird species available. Birding activities include walks, boat cruises and day tours. Other activities include sunset boat cruises on Spionkop Dam, game viewing amongst the rhino, giraffe, and a variety of antelope. Fishing, horseback riding, walking, white water rafting and tours to rock paintings and caves occupied by the KhoiSan (Bushmen) are also available. Tours to Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift are optional.

The main building houses a small but well- appointed library, containing many historic books, a lounge with a fire place and a sunroom in which to relax. A well-appointed Conference Centre is also available. Experience the ultimate in relaxation and tranquillity, lazing in the rock pool as you watch the spectacular sunsets, or just sit on the deck and absorb the serenity of your beautiful surroundings.
