Located amongst rolling plains, plateaus, river banks and miombo vegetation, the brand new Chikunto Safari Lodge is renowned for its surviving wildlife species, providing breath taking scenery and game viewing right from its sweeping terrace and your doorstep.
Our luxurious and spacious Safari tents are raised on 1.5 - 2m high wooden platforms. The tents are very private due to the vast space between them that guarantees peace and privacy.
There are four double (two double/twin and two double) and one family tent with two bedrooms (one double, one twin). The double beds are king size. The side facing the Luangwa River has door windows that allow undisturbed view to the river and the wildlife at the banks.
All tents have an en-suite bathroom with shower, twin washbasins and flushing toilet and are furnished with mosquito net, wardrobe, writing desk and sitting area with a sofa, occasional chair and coffee table. Outside you find our private covered veranda with cozy lounge furniture. There is a fan above the bed and another at the veranda.
The main area incorporates reception, dining area, bar and lounge under a thatch roof. Outside just some steps away, there is a big fire pit to sit around and enjoy your drink before or after dinner. The salt-water (no chlorine) swimming pool has a counter-current system for those who wants to do some exercise.
Also the whole main area is raised on a 1.5m high wooden deck overlooking the Luangwa River.
The lodge runs on eco-friendly solar power. Our tap water is safe to drink. The water comes from a borehole and runs through a German-certified double filtration system with includes two different filters and UV radiation that kills 99.9 % of all bacteria that the water may contain. The quality is regularly checked.
Experts have dubbed South Luangwa one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and not without reason. The concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons is among the most intense in Africa.
We offer game drives (day and night) in open safari vehicles, walking safaris, cultural/village tours and local market visit's. Boat cruises operates from February to April (Emerald Season).
Night drives searching for nocturnal animals is a wonderful experience, not only for Leopard spotting but also for the chance to see smaller carnivores like Genet, Civet, Serval and Honey Badger, also Lion, Hyena, Hippos and Owls.
The birdlife in South Luangwa is phenomenal. More than 400 species have been recorded here. Migratory colonies of carmine bee-eaters nesting on the banks of the river are a must-see if you are here around August and September. Pelicans and yellow-billed storks gather in the last puddles of water in the dry season to scoop out the fish. Owls and nightjars are often spotted on night drives as well as the African Fish Eagle, the national bird of Zambia.
